• The Benefits of Eating Local

    June 23, 2010 // No Comments »

Today, its relatively easy to get foods from afar:  meats, cheese, produce, etc. traveling long distances to the grocer shelves.  Foods have been processed, robbing them of all nutrients, replacing foods with chemicals.  However, shopping local through farmer stands and farmers markets have great benefits.

    • By eating local you get the freshest food around.  Usually the farmer picks the food a day or two before bringing it to market.   These vegetables and fruits have not traveled across country in a truck to get to your door. The vegetables are crisper, fruits are ripe.  The food retains more of their nutrients before you buy them.  The food tastes as it should.  Fantastic.
    • By eating local you are supporting your local farmers and business people.  These people are your neighbors.  You are supporting their business, where they, in turn, support other local businesses.  By supporting your local economy, you are working to build a healthy community.
    • Foods grown locally are not processed.  They don’t contain unhealthy chemicals.  Instead you are getting food rich in vitamins and minerals that will help you be the healthiest person you can be.
    • Eating local reduces your carbon footprint.  Alot of energy goes into harvesting and shipping foods that have come from out of state  or the country.  The amount of oil and gas used  to ship produce is extraordinary. Furthermore, chemicals must be sprayed on the food so that it keeps for the long journey.  By eating local foods, the amount of gas used to ship the foods is kept to a minimum, limiting the amount of fossil fuels used and the amount of pollutants released into the atmosphere.
    • Finally, by eating local, you are able to talk to the person that grew your food.  You are able to ask questions about their practices, get tips for your own garden, discuss how to prepare certain foods.  You have a connection to the food and the farmer that you do not have with purchasing your produce from a grocer.

The Lansdale Farmers Market is dedicated to fostering the eat local movement.  If you are curious as to the benefits of eating local, come on out every Saturday morning from 9-1 on Railroad Plaza.  You won’t be disappointed.

  • Opening Day 2010

    June 9, 2010 // No Comments »

The snap of bean picked fresh off the vine.

The crunch of crisp lettuce tossed in a salad.

The sweet juices of a watermelon dripping off my chin.

The smell of steaks grilling on a hot grill.

Wandering through farmers markets, spending time with members of the community.

These are the things that scream summer.

Well, this weekend, the Lansdale Farmer’s Market will kick off summer by having its opening day celebration.  The market will be open Saturday, June 12, from  9 until 1 on Railroad Ave. at Main Street. There will be a special kids program with storytime and a craft from 10:30-11:30.  We will also have face painting, a bounce house, live music and so much more.  Join your neighbors. Come on out and shop the market.  The fresh produce, plants, grass-fed beef,  handmade goods, and wonderful community spirit will keep  you coming back week after week.  Hope to see you there!
