• Through the Eyes of a Child

    July 7, 2010 // No Comments »

Last week, my family and I shopped at the Lansdale Farmers Market and came home with lots of delicious fruits and vegetables.  Upon arrival at home, my family could not wait to dive into our purchases.  My six-year old daughter grabbed a few sugar snap peas (her favorite vegetable) before they were even out of  the canvas bag.  As she bit down on the pea, her eyes widened and she made and audible “mmmmmmmm” .  She turned to me  immediately and said, “Mommy, these are so much better than what you buy at the store.”  My 3 yo son preceded to eat a half a pint of blueberries in one sitting, his hands moving faster than his little mouth could keep up.

This week, I asked my daughter what she liked about most about shopping at the Lansdale Farmer’s Market.  She had a laundry list of things that she loved.  This is the list in her own words:

    1. “I loved the bounce house.”  (We had a bounce house opening day for kids.  We will be having events like live music, exercise demonstrations, and kids activities throughout the season.)
    2. “I also love making the strawberry craft, mommy.”   (The first Saturday of the month, the Lansdale Farmers Market will have story and craft time at 10:30 am).
    3. “The berries and vegetables are SOOOOOOOOOO good.  I just want to eat them all!”
    4. “I like to see the farmers.  The farmers are cool.  They make fresh food.”
    5. “I like to see all the people from town.  They are our neighbors, and they are nice.”

I love taking my kids to the farmers market.  It opens their eyes and their ideas to their community and the world around them.  As I walk through the market, I talk with the farmers and local artisans.  I teach my kids about the different plants and vegetables we see at the market.  I also talk to them about the local businesses that sell at the market.  They love learning and talking with the farmers, soaking up the essence of the market as only kids can. Bring your kids to the market.  Make it a weekly ritual.  They will remember it, and the lessons learned, for years to come.

  • Opening Day 2010

    June 9, 2010 // No Comments »

The snap of bean picked fresh off the vine.

The crunch of crisp lettuce tossed in a salad.

The sweet juices of a watermelon dripping off my chin.

The smell of steaks grilling on a hot grill.

Wandering through farmers markets, spending time with members of the community.

These are the things that scream summer.

Well, this weekend, the Lansdale Farmer’s Market will kick off summer by having its opening day celebration.  The market will be open Saturday, June 12, from  9 until 1 on Railroad Ave. at Main Street. There will be a special kids program with storytime and a craft from 10:30-11:30.  We will also have face painting, a bounce house, live music and so much more.  Join your neighbors. Come on out and shop the market.  The fresh produce, plants, grass-fed beef,  handmade goods, and wonderful community spirit will keep  you coming back week after week.  Hope to see you there!
