The Lansdale Farmers’ Market began in 2008 as an idea among a small group of local residents. Their goals were to make locally grown and produced foods more widely available to people in the Lansdale area, to draw the borough closer together in community, and to make Lansdale a more attractive regional destination on Saturdays. A series of public meetings in late 2008 and early 2009 quickly drew a gratifying amount of broader support from the Lansdale area. Meanwhile, behind-the-scenes contacts and negotiations began to locate willing farmers and other merchants who would present their foods and wares at the market, should it actually come to fruition.

A crucial milestone was reached in early February, when a $12,000 grant was awarded by the North Penn Community Health Foundation. This grant was used to employ The Food Trust of Philadelphia, an organization that has helped set up 30 markets in southeastern Pennsylvania and beyond, to take care of many of the logistical aspects of starting the market. The “deal was sealed” on May 6 when the Lansdale Borough Council voted to approve the institution of the Farmers’ Market every Saturday in Railroad Plaza. (This year the market will be held each Saturday from July 4 to November 21, from 9 AM to 1 PM).

The Lansdale Farmers’ Market embodies the values of community cooperation, support of local farms, healthful eating, reducing food miles,” and promotion of local businesses. Come to Lansdale on market days to stock up on locally produced vegetables and other tasty foods, wine, and well-made local handicrafts. But the Market will offer you more than that. In Railroad Plaza on Saturday mornings, you will be treated to an education, entertainment, and the enjoyment of gathering with one’s neighbors and friends, old and new, in a spirit of celebration.
